Camino Island Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A delightfully lighthearted caper . . . [a] fast-moving, entertaining tale.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A gang of thieves stage a daring heist from a vault deep below Princeton University’s Firestone Library. Their loot is priceless, impossible to resist.
Bruce Cable owns a popular bookstore in the sleepy resort town of Santa Rosa on Camino Island in Florida. He makes his real money, though, as a prominent dealer in rare books. Very few people know that he occasionally dabbles in unsavory ventures.
Mercer Mann is a young novelist with a severe case of writer’s block who has recently been laid off from her teaching position. She is approached by an elegant, mysterious woman working for an even more mysterious company. A generous monetary offer convinces Mercer to go undercover and infiltrate Cable’s circle of literary friends, to get close to the ringleader, to discover his secrets.

But soon Mercer learns far too much, and there’s trouble in paradise—as only John Grisham can deliver it.

A bit disappointed in that the read was very simplistic, and there was some repetition that bothered me. It seemed contrived. I've always liked your work but didn't think this was your best effort.
  • A Pleasant Step Away From Legal Thrillers

Apparently, I'm the second person to have actually read the book and review it. I almost never write reviews because I don't figure people need my opinion to decide whether they'll like a book, but seeing the poor rating this book has because of two weirdos who haven't even bothered to read it, I decided to throw my 2 cents out there. What you need to know is that this is not a legal thriller. It's actually a nice divergence away from that for Grisham. It's certainly not a deep or philosophical read, and I got through it in about 3 hours. I also figured the end story about halfway through. But it was enjoyable and didn't become preachy, like I've found some of his books to be. Overall, I'd call it an easy, breezy summer read.

This book was very disappointing. The story had such potential, but there was no drama. No chase scene. No danger. No fear for the main characters. No good guy/bad guy charity. This was a summer beach book that was a waist of time. Can't recommend it to anyone.

By far the least favorite of Grisham’s books!
  • Not a page-turner

Meh, not much going on with this book. Kind of boring. Definitely not like the Grisham books I have loved in the past.
  • Lifelike etc

Good characters and character building. Main story is very interesting and other stories were fit in neatly. Leaves some questions unanswered but yields overall satisfaction.
  • Builds up well, but disappoints at the end

    By Rooney !!!!!!
The story is built up quite well. Makes you think there will be a surprising end. But in the end, leaves you wanting for more.
  • Painfully slow

    By Kamoran1234
The story includes a lot of dialogue about what makes a book good. Given that, this book seems to mock the reader in that it is painfully slow and doesn't seem worth finishing. Very disappointing for Grisham.

  • Love Grisham...but not this one...sorry!

    By Prescott Lady
Good read until the end. It appeared that Grisham rushed to complete this novel. Too predictable.
  • What an entertaining story!!

Although most of John Grisham's novels are about lawyers, This was a pleasant surprise! He knows how to weave a tale. He knows how to put enough humor and suspense into his stories that you get so wrapped up in the characters you don't want the story to end!!!
